Student hits half-court shot, wins free Cubby’s for a year
BROOKINGS – At halftime of Sunday’s Women’s National Invitational (WNIT) game, South Dakota State University student Carter Holm had the chance to win free Cubby’s for one year. All he had to do? Make a half-court shot in front of the 4,268 people in attendance.
“I was a little nervous because there was so many people there,” Holm said.
Prior to the game, Holm, who is a 5th year student majoring in early childhood education, knew he was going to be taking the shot but decided not to practice.
“But I’m always ready,” Holm said.
After walking out to half-court, Holm was handed the ball, took a few dribbles and then calmly stepped into a half-courter - which “banked-in” - to the delight of the nearly capacity crowd at Frost Arena.
Holm immediately got a big hug from SDSU’s mascot, Jack the Jackrabbit, and then juiced the crowd up even more with a few “pump up” gestures.
A 2017 graduate of Brookings High School, Holm’s immediate thought after making the shot was to calculate out “how many dates I can go on at Cubby’s” with his prize.
While what exactly “free Cubby’s for a year” means wasn’t made immediately clear to Holm after hitting the shot, it will likely be either one large gift card or a weekly $20 gift card to the Brookings restaurant.
The SDSU women’s basketball team went on to defeat Alabama 78-73 in the WNIT quarterfinals. They will now play host to UCLA this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Frost Arena.
Tickets for the game are available online, at JackrabbitTickets.com, or by calling the SDSU Ticket Office at 605-651-2567.
